Boston - Bargate Green

The first bicycle race in Boston was when the Boston Athletic Club held their annual sports on June 29th 1869 with a velocipede race on Bargate Green. The Boston Guardian reported that "many thousands of people assembled to witness the race. There were fifteen entries, but only eleven contested. The distance run was one mile - nine times round the Green." There were three heats and G Lee of Helpringham won by half a lap in 6 min 33 sec.
